A comparison of Hyades and Cretin for modeling laser absorption in underdense plasmas

چکیده
In a laser produced plasma (LPP), the temperature and density profile and history are determined by the laser energy absorbed by the plasma. Therefore, it is extremely important that the absorption coefficients are calculated accurately when modeling LPP's. We have compared the inverse bremsstrahlung absorption coefficients of the radiation-hydrodynamic code Hyades [1] with the non-LTE atomic kinetics / radiation transfer code Cretin [2]. We found that the absorption coefficients disagree at relatively low electron temperatures (1-100 eV), and then begin to converge as the temperature rises above 100 eV. These discrepancies lead to a dramatically different temperature and density evolution of the LPP.

Inverse Braking Radiation and Resonance Absorption in Corona Plasmas of Inertial Confinement Fusion
Abstract: In this paper, combining the Maxwell equations with the electron balanceequation, we obtain the inverse braking radiation absorption coefficient in a laser fusioncorona plasma. For a fixed plasma temperature, variations of the absorption coefficientversus the penetration depth into the plasma are illustrated numerically for differentvalues of laser wavelength. ...

One of the interesting Laser-Plasma phenomena, when the laser power is high and ultra intense, is the generation of large amplitude plasma waves (Wakefield) and electron acceleration. An intense electromagnetic laser pulse can create plasma oscillations through the action of the nonlinear pondermotive force. electrons trapped in the wake can be accelerated to high energies, more than 1 TW. Of t...
متن کاملAttosecond electron sheets and attosecond light pulses from relativistic laser wakefields in underdense plasmas
A method for producing dense attosecond electron sheets (tens nanometers thick corresponding to attosecond duration) and single intense attosecond light pulse is reported based on relativistic laser wakefields in underdense plasmas. By making use of gas targets this method allows for high repetition rates required for applications.
متن کاملParticle-in-cell simulations of high energy electron production by intense laser pulses in underdense plasmas
The propagation of intense laser pulses and the generation of high energy electrons from the underdense plasmas are investigated using two dimensional particlein-cell simulations. When the ratio of the laser power and a critical power of relativistic self-focusing is the optimal value, it propagates stably and electrons have maximum energies.

The understanding of laser beam propagation through underdense plasmas is of vital importance to laser-plasma interaction experiments, as well as being a fundamental physics issue. Formation of plasma channels has numerous applications including table-top xray lasers and laser-plasma-produced particle accelerators. The fast ignitor concept, for example, requires the formation of an evacuated ch...
